 How Lexical Bundle Affects EFL Writing Quality

IN six academic writing meetings, we attended the Research Talk 11 seminar with speakers Christianus I Wayan Eka Budiartha from Sampoerna University and Siti Aisah, M.Hum. from Sultan Ageng Tirtayasa University as moderators. The topic of Research Talk 11 is "EFL Vocabulary Profile and Lexical Collection of Academic Writing: Corpus-Based Studies in English Language Teaching". 

What is a lexical bundle??....

Lexical bundles are two or more strings of words that co-occur frequently in a corpus or in a particular register. Lexical Bundles help to shape meanings in specific contexts and contribute to our sense of coherence in a text. There are three distinct strands of research in the study of vocabulary: lexical knowledge, literacy, and metalinguistic awareness.

Student literacy can have an important effect on the writing quality of EFL students. The importance of mastery of medium to low-frequency words affects the academic success of many students. So academic success can be accounted for by the ability to access and use higher lexical registers. Students who cannot change lexical devices and switch from informal conversation registers to analytical registers, in the academic field these students will face more difficulties in school because the demands for reading and writing increase. Meanwhile, the mastery of the lexical register is low. In addition, working on teachers' metalinguistic awareness is something significant for EFL students.

Regarding the structure characteristic, a number of lexical bundles were closely related (e.g. the other hand, on the other hand, etc). Meanwhile, in terms of functional characteristics, i.e. highlighting the first person point of view (e.g. I believe that, in my opinion, I strongly believe that, etc)

In other words, we can say that it is the students' mastery of the lexical bundle that really affects the writing quality of the EFL students. Moreover, demands for writing and reading are getting higher so it requires students to further improve their ability to recognize various vocabularies or their vocabulary profiles.
