How to Write Good Academic Writing

At the 4th Academic Writing meeting, the topic discussed was Academic Writing. Although at the first meeting the topic was discussed, this time the discussion was more in-depth and detailed. So that students can understand the meaning of academic writing itself. So what is the meaning of academic writing?

Academic writing is formal writing that has a higher standard of discipline than informal writing. Discipline standards in it, namely; clear, concise, focused, structured, and supported by accurate evidence. As we know in academics, writing must use a formal tone and style. This means that in writing academic writings, you must avoid jargon, slang, and abbreviations. Formal writings can be found in legal documents. Writers working on school papers, college application essays, scientific papers, research papers, conference presentations, and business proposals generally use a more formal style.

As for the things that need to be considered in addition to the use of good grammar, including; structure, topics, literature, processes or stages, and plagiarism.

a.      Compiling structure  

The structure of formal writing generally consists of an introduction, content and conclusion.

-   In the introduction it can load; quotes, questions, opinions, interesting facts, ironies or paradoxes, analogies, and anecdotes.

-       In a paragraph, the content should flow naturally with each other and connections should be made so that it becomes coherent.

-   In conclusion, you must follow some instructions; do not introduce anything new, draw an introduction, show a conclusion or lack of conclusions, give the essay a sense of completeness, leave a final impression.

b.     Topic 

The choice of topic must also be considered by considering whether the topic is interesting for the reader to foster an attitude of judgment or criticism.

c.     Literature 

In selecting literature we also need to pay attention to the time of publication, the qualifications of  the authors, and the context of the relevant sources.

d.      Processes or stages   

To make an article there are several stages that must be passed, namely; determining topics, making outlines, compiling paragraphs, editing, and revising.

e.       Plagiarism 

Plagiarism is the activity of copying other people's ideas or writings that are entered into our          writing, to check it we can use several applications such as; Turnitin, PlagScan, and Scribbr.

Based on the explanation of the material, we can see that academic writing is a formal writing style that has a higher discipline than informal writing. In addition to paying attention to the rules of writing, there are also important elements that must be considered, such as; structure, topics, literature, stages, and plagiarism. Although most novice writers find it difficult to write academic writings because of the formal style, it is common. Because in fact writing informally is easier and the writer is more familiar with the choice of words. In other words, strong composition, solid grammar, and a consistent stylistic approach are important aspects of academic writing.
