Perceptions of Gender Equality in Indonesia: Focus on Education

Gender equality is an old issue that is still developing today. Many people in Indonesia and even the world are still having problems with this problem. Differences in perception are the main points that cause these cases to continue to this day, although not as bad as before. Especially against women, as we know in ancient times women were underestimated by most people. Where they are made sex slaves even though they have become wives, they are only considered housemaids who are always in touch with "kitchens, wells, mattresses". Thus giving birth to female emancipation players, until now.

These women's emancipation fighters were born as a form of awareness, progress, and justice for their rights as they should be. R.A. Kartini is one of the heroes of Indonesian women's emancipation. Meanwhile, in the international world, there are several other women's emancipation heroes such as; Sojourner Truth, Elizabeth Blackwell, and Katharine Hepburn. Even in this millennial era, there are very inspiring figures, including; Najwa Shihab, Malaka Yousfazai, Oprah Winfrey, Dian Sastrowardoyo, and Priyanka Chopra. They are some great examples of women fighting for gender justice. Both in the fields of education, work, and social status.

As time goes by, the challenge of inequality in gender even changes. If in the past the problem focused on education and social status, now it focuses more on people's perceptions or mindsets. First is the public perception that boys bring more luck to a family than girls. The second case concerns social views, where women who are over 25 years old and unmarried will be ridiculed by the surrounding community. However, this is different from men who are free to marry at any time and it is considered natural. Another case is about the nature of women, which is based on the mindset of the community, especially in remote areas, that women should stay at home to be housewives.

This women's emancipation movement succeeded in changing the perception of some people and justifying the rights of women they should have. In this increasingly advanced world of education, there is no longer any discrimination against gender, all are treated equally. As in the process of learning at school or in the achievement of an educational degree. Both women and men both get the same knowledge and knowledge and are free to choose the field of study they want to pursue. Although there are some things that must be distinguished, such as in practical assignments that prioritize physical strength. Based on my experience for about 12 years. The educational process is carried out according to the needs and abilities of students. As in sports, male students will have a higher level of difficulty than female students. Usually, female students only go around the field 3 times, but boys are required to go around 5 times. This is done because in reality the strength of a man cannot be compared with the physical strength of a woman.

Gender equality does not only focus on women's rights but also relates to men's rights. In society, a man who pursues fashion or make-up is seen as unusual and becomes ridiculed by people. Whereas both men and women are supposed to be free to choose and get a job regardless of gender. Often in the learning process, a teacher will discuss gender equality as a form of related learning material or as an encouragement so that students do not feel left out to achieve their goals. As in some jobs dominated by men; racers, pilots, firefighters, skippers, and football athletes. As for the men who should not shrink their guts in reaching their goals. As in some jobs dominated by women; designers, make-up and dancers. Therefore, the need to change the perception or mindset of the community towards gender issues is the main key. This change can be supported by the installation of slogans and news regarding their achievements. Based on the explanation, it can be explained that the meaning of gender is justice in getting equal treatment, rights and obligations for both women and men.
