What is academic writing?
In the first meeting in the academic writing course, I think that this course would be complex because when I read "academic" it's absolutely riskier about the rules. As we know that writing is used to communicate one's knowledge in the form of writing or text so that other people who are fluent in the language can read and understand the ideas conveyed (Naglieri J.A, 2011). Meanwhile, academic writing is a formal style used in colleges and universities. As defined by Andrew Kemp (2007) academic writing is the writing style found in scholarly writing in education. Unlike many content areas, educational writing can cover any area from biology to economics, from literature to history, and from curriculum to instruction.
Academic writing also
has some characteristics or rules to write on. Because in education, both
students and researchers have to follow the rules to publish their work. Some of
them are; clear, concise, focused, structured and backed up by evidence, has a
formal tone and style like APA style, but it is not complex and does not
require the use of long sentences and complicated vocabulary. Academic
writings are “written and printed” reports (Day, 2005, p. 9) that describe
“original research results”, “with a strongly structured intellectual system”
(Bayat, 2014: 157), that requires “logic, clarity, truth” (Aceto, 2003, p. 8).
In addition, “In academic writing, it is necessary to produce logically
structured ideas with well-thought-out, verified points and to consider
different opinions” (Gillet, Hammond & Martala, 2009, p. 88).
Besides that, there are many problems in writing both in the process and even in the beginning. Like topic selection, “In
academic writing, it is necessary to produce logically structured ideas with
well-thought-out, verified points and to consider different opinions” (Gillet,
Hammond & Martala, 2009, p. 88). Swarni (2016) said that some urgent things
should be paid attention to in writing such as grammar, choice of words,
punctuation, capitalization, spelling, vocabulary, and unity among the
paragraph. According to, Alfaki (2015) university students have various writing
problems: language problems at the levels of morphology and syntax, usage
errors, mechanical mistakes, that is, spelling, punctuation and
capitalisation, lack of several writing development skills, cognitive problems
and graphomotor problems.
Nowadays writing is not only with pen and paper but we also use technology, which is called " digital writing". Digital writing is the art and practice of preparing documents primarily by computer and often for online delivery. Peterson-Karlan
(2011) discusses some of the benefits of digital writing: Technology-supported
writing can advance all phases of writing planning, transcribing, editing, and revising using tools. But
technology also enables writing in new ways. Technology provides new sources
for and means of obtaining information (e.g., the Internet, search engines) and
enables sharing, editing, and collaboration among writers, teachers, and peers
